DS Midway Gardens Chess Pieces
These handsome oversize chess pieces are adaptations of the various sculptures and architectural details designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Midway Gardens (1913-1929) in Chicago, Illinois, a city block area dedicated to entertainment. The original sculptures were larger than life size and overlooked the many open air gardens, restaurants, music, and dance areas in the complex. Demolished in 1929 due to the stock market crash and the ban on liquor, the unique sculptures would have been lost if it hadn't been for the foresight of the demolition contractor who saved them for posterity.
