April Showers Coasters, tops of four in set

April Showers Round Coasters, Set of 4

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is recognized world-wide as one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century. His work heralded a new thinking in architecture, using innovation in design and engineering made possible by newly developed technology and materials. His creative ability extended far beyond the border of architecture to graphic design, furniture, art glass, textiles, and decorative elements for the home.

Taken from Wright’s graphic design for a Liberty magazine cover (1927-1928) that was never published, this image is an abstract version of springtime rain. The lively combination of squares on a 45 degree angle and the repetitive pattern of circles at the intersections were possibly inspired by Japanese prints he collected. In addition to the repetitive diagonal pattern, two of the squares on the angle represent cages, each of which house an abstract bird shape. Hence, another adaptation of this design was titled The Canary, Bird in the Cage.
