The design of this product was adapted from the perforated boards in the Rosenbaum House which infuse the house with individuality, allow in light, and create interesting shadows and light patterns in the interior of the house which change as the sun moves across the sky without the expense of art glass. The Rosenbaum House is the only structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the state of Alabama. This house was one of the earliest Usonian houses that Wright would base on the Jacobs House prototype of 1936. The Usonian designed house was offered by Wright as a low-cost home for middle income families in the era of the Great Depression. With Wright’s plans, a young family could build their own home, fulfilling the American dream of home ownership. Built for newlyweds Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in 1939, the house originally contained 1,540 square feet. After four sons, they called upon Wright to design an addition. In 1948 he added 1,084 square feet. This seamless addition clearly shows Wright’s concept of a Usonian house that could grow with the family as it grew.
